Fore! Local businesses swing into action and help University athletes

Many Langley businesses have supported Spartan athletics as it’s matured and developed throughout the past decade. And as Trinity Western University has begun to gain national notoriety, TWU athletes and supporters alike are satisfied that the hard work is paying off. Not only is TWU home to Canada West’s Coach of the Year, Stan Peters, and All-stars Adam Friesen, Ben Josephson and Paul Ballard, but also this season the TWU volleyball, soccer, and basketball teams all achieved top 10 national standings.

Friday May 4th marked the ninth annual TWU ‘Speedy Glass” golf tournament hosted by Spartan Athletics an event created to provide TWU’s local corporate supporters and partners with a practical means of assisting the university—and having fun while doing it.

“This tournament has been a great success,” says Steve Scholz, the Associate Director of Athletics and director of the golf tournament. “The support we received from corporate sponsorship has been really encouraging—we surpassed our goal of raising $60,000 and raised $63,000.”

The money raised goes directly toward student athletic scholarship endowment awards. As a privately funded university, these endowment dollars are vital for TWU student-athletes. “Now that we play at the CIS level, we find that we’re very far behind the bigger universities when it comes to endowment dollars,” says Scholz. “This is one fund-raiser we do to close the gap.”

Representatives from Coca-Cola, Sharp & Com-Pro, Sodexho, Speedy Glass and WirelessWave were just some of the golfing participants who were more than happy to help close the gap. The 36 competing teams not only enjoyed a great day of sun and golf but they also had a chance to challenge the golf skills of fellow participant Damon Allen. And even though Allen is a professional football player, few golfers actually beat his closest to the pin shot.

Allan Skidmore, Chairman and CEO of Speedy Glass's parent company Autostock International, explains why Speedy has been the title sponsor of TWU's Golf Tournament three years running. "TWU, just like us, is committed to a standard of excellence," he says. "We believe in supporting the future leaders of our community, so the tournament is just a fun way to help with the scholarships for the students and to get the business community involved."

Also contributing to the tournament’s community feel was the 70 TWU volunteers who came out to help. “Our volunteers made all the difference,” says Scholz. “It gave it that personal touch and TWU spirit that makes the university so special.”

Trinity Western University would like to thank all of its sponsors, including Ronald Blue who provided TVs for the banquet’s Canucks fans. Congratulations go to Assante Financial, the low gross winners, and Sun Cruz, Preston Chev-Olds and Only Yours Design, the winners of their categories.
