The signature of a TWU choir

Langley, B.C.—This holiday season, the public is invited to enjoy the sounds of the Trinity Western University choirs, guests of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) in performances of Verdi Requiem, and guests of the Vancouver Chamber Choir (VCC) and the CBC Radio Orchestra in a performance of Magnificat! the joy of Christmas. Both concerts will be CBC broadcast events.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to hear great music and terrific singing,” says Wes Janzen, D.M.A., Director of Choral Activities at TWU.

Over the years, a blend of skill, excellence and integrity have fashioned a musical signature for the Trinity Western University choirs that have garnered them numerous prestigious performance invitations. “TWU Choirs have frequently been included in broadcasts with the VSO and the Vancouver Chamber Choir,” says Janzen.

TWU performances with the VSO have included Berlioz L'Enfance du Christ (Andrew Litton), Mendelssohn Lobgesang (Sergiu Comissiona), and Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony (Kazuyoshi Akiyama). Performances with the VCC have included Handel Samson and Bach Christmas Oratorio (Jon Washburn), and Mozart Coronation Mass (Frieder Bernius).

The combination of student and professional musicianship characteristic of a choir student’s experience at TWU, is a practise heralded by other music instructors. “The unselfish insistence that students experience other performance styles and work with other conductors gives them an unusually broad background," says Bruce Pullan, Associate Professor of Music at the University of British Columbia.

For TWU choirs, the concerts are a chance to enjoy music and develop skill. “It’s our desire to do marvellous music with joy, skill and a high level of discipline," says Janzen.
