TWU Loses Member of Family

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University (TWU) community was shaken by the death of one of its members, Jason Senechal -- a student, a friend and a member of the TWU Spartan men’s volleyball team.

At 3:30 pm Saturday July 19, while playing in the semi-finals of the Under 24 Ontario Volleyball Association’s beach volleyball tournament in Cobourg, ON, Jason died of a massive coronary.

Jason had been playing in a highly competitive match, and while returning to position after blocking at the net, he collapsed. Lakeshore paramedics and Cobourg firefighters worked for several minutes before Jason was rushed to Northumberland Health Care Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

“Jason was the fittest member of our team and as such this tragic news has come as a complete shock to all of us,” said TWU men’s volleyball head coach Ron Pike. “Jason was a fantastic person with an unwavering desire to seek the Lord, a commitment to his friends and family, a desire to see others come to know the Lord and a passion for his teammates and playing volleyball. His strength of character and his fun loving nature endeared him to everyone he had contact with. I can't even begin to express the profound loss our program feels.”

While at Trinity Western University, the third year native of Guelph, ON was a setter for the men’s volleyball team and a student majoring in Human Kinetics.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on Thursday, July 24 at the Lakeshore Pentecostal Camp in Cobourg, ON. Jason would have been 23 on July 28.
