Chapel Court and Countryside presents ‘Brahms and Friends’

Langley, B.C.—Trinity Western University’s Music Department invites the public is invited to hear a concert of violin, piano and voice as they unite at this February’s Chapel Court and Countryside concert ‘Brahms and Friends’. Titled after the concert’s featured composer, Johannes Brahms, the event will also include the music of Robert Schumann, Antonin Dvorak and Clara Schumann.

Bringing to life the sonatas, descants and solos of these heralded composers will be Calvin Dyck on violin, Betty Suderman on piano and Grace Chan as soprano. All three are locally based music professionals with international acclaim.

Selections to be performed include: the Brahms Violin Sonata in A Major, two songs for Soprano with Violin Descant, “Capriccio” by Brahms, “In der Nacht” by Robert Schumann, “Songs my Mother Taught Me” by Dvorak. Selected portions of letters by Brahms, Clara and Robert will be read in between the musical performances.

Calvin Dyck is a teacher, performer and conductor of music with a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Violin Performance. Dyck is concertmaster for the Vancouver Island Symphony in Nanaimo, conductor of the Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir in Abbotsford and an instructor at Trinity Western University.

Betty Suderman is an accomplished pianist who’s known as a performer of Lieder and chamber music around the world. Suderman’s collaborative experience includes partnerships with the Vancouver Cantata Singers, The Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir and West Coast Mennonite Chamber Choir.

Grace Chan is a mezzo-soprano who experiments with forms, genres, and vocal styles that cater to a modern audience. Based in Vancouver, Chan has had performance experiences around the world including Canada, the United States, Asia and the Czech Republic working with various professional groups.

Trinity Western University, located in Langley, B.C., is a not-for-profit Christian liberal arts university enrolling over 3,500 students this year. With a broad based, liberal arts and sciences curriculum, the University offers undergraduate degrees in 38 major areas of study ranging from business, education and computer science to biology and nursing, and 13 other graduate degrees including counselling psychology, theology and administrative leadership.
