Only an Inkling

A show curated by the Open Book Art Collective

He sees no stars who does not see them first
of living silver made that sudden burst
to flame like flowers beneath the ancient song,
whose very echo after-music long
has since pursued.
(from "Mythopoeia" by J.R.R. Tolkien)

Wonder and longing, truth and myth, narrative and enchantment. These are a handful of themes explored in Only an Inkling. The artists chose relevant books or passages that are as variegated as the individuals who make up the Inklings themselves. Their unified desire is to restore a sense of wonder in our engagement with personal narratives, the objects around us, and the mythologies that shape our identities.

The Open Book Art Collective members make work in an intuitive form of critical engagement with the text. They are not creating to anyalze or critique, to unravel threads or dig into history. Instead, the act of creating happens through an intuitive chasing after Inklings--their hunches and ideas and the glimpses and glimmers of interest. The artists seek to read below the surface of the texts, excavating ideas and transforming them into thought provoking imagery.
