Foul-fest Proves Spartan's Demise

Langley, British Columbia - It wasn't to be two in a row for the Trinity Western University men's basketball team. The Spartans (1-5), after winning the night before, fell in a foul-filled game on November 20 to the University of Regina (2-4). The Cougars led the whole way and found themselves up 88-80 at the final buzzer.

The Spartans climbed back from a 13-point halftime deficit and were in the game until fouls put them away at the end. The Spartans had 29 fouls and no players remaining on the bench at the end of the game and the Cougars topped out with 31 fouls. Regina's three-point bombs proved to be too much for the Spartans and the Cougars had the edge in the final minutes, putting a bit of distance between the two squads.

Josh Hall was again the Spartan's leading scorer, as he tossed in 22 points. Malcolm Campbell added 18 points and 9 rebounds and Gary Chapman had 17 points with 11 rebounds for the Spartans. Geoff Glasspell, who had 22 points, led Regina.

"We weren't mentally prepared for tonight and our immaturity showed in the first 10 minutes. It is pretty tough to come back 14 points in this league, but I am proud of the way we played to tie the game with less than 2 minutes to play. We played with guts and determination, but weren't able to finish down the stretch," noted Head Coach Stan Peters.

"Gary had an unbelievable game. He just played great all around to get 17 points and 11 rebounds. Josh had a decent game again tonight and played unselfish basketball," continued Peters.

"We will use this next week to prepare for Manitoba," added Peters. TWU plays in the Simon Fraser Tournament on November 26 and 27 and then host the University of Manitoba on December 3 and 4.
