TWU Spartans (98) vs University of Manitoba Bisons (96) - Overtime

Spartans Win It Twice

Langley, British Columbia - On Saturday December 4, 1999 the Trinity Western University men's basketball team beat the University of Manitoba Bisons twice, but only one counted on the score sheet. With one second to go in regulation and the game tied at 91-91 TWU's Josh Hall went up for a jump shot. As the ball was going through the basket the buzzer went off, and the two points gave the Spartans the win, until the trail official waved off the basket forcing the game into overtime.

The Spartans continued to play tough in the 5 minutes of overtime. The Spartans, Josh Hall scored first to take the lead on a jump shot, 93-91. The teams exchanged foul shots over the next few minutes. Then with 53 seconds to go in the game Manitoba's Ogo Okwumabua hit for two of his 32 points to put the Bisons up one, 96-95. Fifteen seconds later Trinity Western's Josh Hall hit a jumper in traffic to give the Spartans the lead by one, 97-96. As the clock wound down the Bisons went to their star Ogo Okwumabua to score again. But it was not to be, as Ogo was driving to the basket TWU's Tyler Coston stripped Ogo of the ball. As Coston went the other way he was intentionally fouled. Coston went down and made one of his two foul shots to put the Spartans up two, 98-96, and seal the victory for the Spartans.

"The thing we talked about in pre game was to play with courage, and for our guys to step up," said TWU coach Stan Peters. "At different parts of the game we had guys make the plays. Malcolm Campbell was huge for us in the first half, Rick Pridmore led us in the second half with his intensity and rebounding and Josh Hall finished the game for us.

Leading the way for the Spartans were Josh Hall (32 points), Malcolm Campbell (16 points, 7 rebounds) and Rick Pridmore (13 points, 7 rebounds). Top statistical leaders for the Bisons were Ogo Okwumabua (32 points, 7 rebounds) and Matt Lechasseur (17 points, 8 assists).

The next game for the Spartans is Monday December 27 in Victoria, BC at the University of Victoria Invitational Tournament.
