Spartans Drop Physical Game to Bears

Langley, British Columbia - An Alberta run in the middle of the second half was enough to put away the Trinity Western University men's basketball team. The Spartans hosted Alberta on February 11, in the first of a two game set and played strong with the Golden Bears except for a 4-minute stretch in the second. Alberta ended the game up by the final of 78-66.

Alberta (14-5) went on the first run of the game, as with less than 8 minutes to go they stormed ahead 27-20 on the back of an 11-2 run. The Spartans tied it at 27-27 and then Alberta took a 35-33 lead into halftime. With 13 minutes to play the Spartans were up 2, but the Golden Bears went on a 13-0 run and that was too much for TWU. The Spartans never recovered and Alberta won it handily in the end.

"We played well for 30 minutes and then U of A put the clamps on us defensively. We committed a lot of turnovers (27) and also forced up quick shots. The difference between good teams and great teams is consistency. What we need to push us over the top is to play with more consistency," said Head Coach Stan Peters.

Nick Maglisceau (Alberta) led the way with 22 points. Josh Hall led the Spartans with 14 points and Malcolm Campbell tossed in an additional 13.

"I thought Malcolm played real tough. He is a first year CIAU player guarding a potential All-Canadian (Maglisceau) and he did a great job. We just didn't get Malcolm the ball enough," noted Peters.

"We did some good things tonight. In spurts we played great defense and forced them into turnovers, but we just need more consistency," remarked Peters.

The Spartans will end their season February 12, as the loss and a Calgary win quelled any hopes of post-season play for the Spartans. Game time against Alberta will be 8 p.m.
