TWU Spartans (77) vs. the University of Manitoba Bisons (72)

Spartans Complete Road Sweep

Langley, British Columbia - As opposed to last night's old-fashioned shootout, tonight's game was a little uglier, but still effective, as the Spartans pulled out the win, 77-72, to make it two straight on the road against the University of Manitoba Bisons.

"Tonight's win was tougher than the first, but Adam Friesen had a fantastic game. He put the team on his back and carried us to the win," said Coach Stan Peters.

Once again the Spartans opened the game with a lead, going up 19-5 at one point. The Bisons were able to cut into the lead slightly to get within ten, 37-27, at the half. TWU wasn't quite as hot from the floor as last night, but still managed a very decent 42.9% from the 3-point line as well as going 10-10 from the free throw line in the first half.

Manitoba wasn't able to significantly chip into the deficit until late in the second half. Down by fourteen with eight minutes remaining, the combination of Spartan turnovers and key points in the paint by a couple of Bison players caused the game to be closer than perhaps it might have been.

"We had to get through some adversity tonight, including foul trouble (Kitteringham fouled out), so it was a good gut check for us. We're really happy with the sweep and being 6-4 in our division," commented Coach Peters.

Friesen led all scorers with 26 points (as well as 5 rebounds and 5 assists), while Ryan Dulder led Manitoba with 21 points.

Men's basketball hosts UBC next weekend, January 10 and 11, at 8:00pm. Come and cheer on your Spartans in what is sure to be some entertaining basketball between two of the better teams in CIS.

Game Notes: The Spartans are on a 5-0 run, including their 3-0 sweep of the UBC Christmas Tournament...this weekend was the first time in their short CIS history that TWU's men's basketball team has swept a team on the road...Coach Peters: "This was HUGE for us"...
