SPARTANS BLOW PAST LAURENTIAN

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
The Trinity Western men’s basketball met its first CIS competition of the 2010-11 season Thursday night and promptly cruised to a 90-76 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs in a pre-season tilt played at White Rock Christian Academy.

The Spartans, who tip off the Canada West regular season Oct. 22 in Lethbridge, capped their pre-season schedule with a near wire to wire victory that saw them take the lead five seconds into the game and, for the most part, maintain momentum throughout.

With more than a month between the Spartans last game against university level competition – an 80-68 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers – it was clear TWU needed to shake off some rust, especially defensively, but Thursday’s game was a perfect opportunity to dust off the cobwebs before next week’s opener.

“The game was a see-saw game with us always being up between 10 and 20,” said Spartans coach Scott Alllen. “But we’re looking for way more from out team right now and a little bit more of a killer instinct this year. We’d like to take a 15 point lead and put it up to 25 rather than the other way. One of the keys was a lack of discipline today. But it was a good pre-season win and good start to the season.”

Spartans guard Calvin Westbrook led the team in scoring with 22 points as he came off the bench and hit four shots from beyond the arc. Tristan Smith was next for TWU with 14 points while Jacob Doerksen contributed 13.

For the Voyageurs, Isiah Pasquale led the team with 28 points while Manny Pasquale was second with 15.

The Spartans found themselves in foul trouble early and often as starters Kyle Coston, Tyrell Mara and Doerksen all fouled out of the game.

The Spartans will now prepare for their two-game weekend series in Lethbridge Oct. 22-23 while the Voyageurs will continue their West Coast trip, playing UBC Friday and Fraser Valley Saturday.
