TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS (100) AT REGINA COUGARS (60)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS THUMP COUGARS FOR FIRST HOME WIN

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
The Trinity Western Spartans used a critically timed first quarter run to take a sizable lead and then cruised to 100-60 win over Regina Friday night at the Langley Events Centre.

With the Cougars leading 14-9 midway through the first quarter, Trinity Western turned things around in a hurry as they went on a game-changing 12-0 run, capped by an emphatic Jacob Doerksen dunk, which gave the Spartans a lead they would take to the final horn.

“I thought we played outstanding physically,” said Spartans coach Scott Allen. “We really did a great job on rebounding and controlling the boards, which is one of our mandates. And when you have Tyrell [Mara] and Jacob [Doerksen} on the floor, they command attention.”

The win was the first victory at home for TWU and improved its Canada West record to 5-2, while the loss was Regina’s first of the year as they are now 4-1 on the season.

After TWU took off late in the first quarter, the Spartans kept their momentum flowing as they rolled into the second quarter dominating the boards and shutting down the Cougars offence. The Spartans outscored Regina 24-10 in the second frame and had a 48-27 lead at the break.

In the second half, Spartans fans witnessed more of the same as TWU came out with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 28-18 and giving themselves a 31-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

With such a sizable lead, Allen was able to sub in his entire bench for some valuable playing time throughout much of the second half.

In the fourth quarter, the Spartans won the scoring battle again, this time 24-15, and hit the century mark with a Daniel Horner three-pointer.

In a 40-point contest that favoured the home side, the game was ultimately won on the glass. Trinity Western outrebounded Regina 42-18, including 13 offensive rebounds. Leading the boards brigade was TWU's Tyrell Mara who had 14 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.

“It’s just about being relentless on the offensive boards,” Allen said. “That’s what we do."

The Spartans Calvin Westbrook led all shooters with 21 points, including going three for four from beyond the arc. Trinity Western had five players hit double digits as Doerksen had 14 points, Mara and Tonner Jackson both had 12 and Lance Verhoeff had 10.

For Regina, the offence came from Lynn Gee, who had 12 points, and Paul Gareau, who had 10. Kris Heshka led the Cougars with five rebounds.

The two teams will meet in a rematch Saturday at the Langley Events Centre. Game time is 7:00 p.m.

GAME NOTES – The Spartans shot 47.9 per cent from the field while Regina shot 25.9 per cent…TWU shot 45.5 per cent from three-point range while Regina shot 16.7 per cent.
