MEN’S BASKETBALL WINS FIRST GAME IN CHINA

HABEI, China –
The Trinity Western University men’s basketball team opened its Chinese tour with an 88-54 win over Hebei University Monday.

The Spartans were led by Kurtis Osborne, who had a career high 18 points and seven rebounds while Calvin Westbrook added 17 points.

Trinity Western was the better squad from the opening tip-off to the final horn, which gave Spartans coach Scott Allen a chance to evenly distribute minutes throughout the team in what was a dominating effort.

“We gained some valuable experience for our young players,” Allen said. “Kurtis [Osborne] was aggressive on both ends of the court and was solid around the hoop. Jesse [Jeffers] was a pleasant surprise on the offensive boards and if he remains healthy he will give us an added boost. And Lucian [Sauciuc], while he was limited in his minutes, had a nine point tear in the first half where he hit three 3-pointers in less than a minute.”

With a crowd of nearly 1000 people, many of which were there to cheer for Trinity Western, the Spartans were audience pleasers right from the get-go as they took control of the game early and built a 20-8 lead by the end of the first quarter.

By halftime it was 35-20 and by the end of the third quarter, the Spartans held a 62-35 advantage. In the fourth quarter, they kept pushing the pace as they finished with a 34-point win.

The Spartans have three more games in China starting with a game Wednesday against Tianjin Polytechnic and the two games against Renmin University Thursday and Friday before returning to Langley Saturday.
