SPARTANS FINISH GOODWILL TOUR UNBEATEN

BEIJING, China – In their final game day of the Goodwill Tour of China the Trinity Western University Spartans defeated Tsinghua University 98-97 in a tightly contested men’s basketball game. The win makes the Spartans 3-0 on the tour.

“Tsinghua has a lot of skilled players and they are a good team. It was good for our players to get into a game that was a battle,” commented TWU head coach Scott Allen. “The guys are showing lots of character and they are finding their identity and learning to battle as a team.”

The Spartans began the game strong and jumped out to an early 18-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. TWU’s strong play continued through the second quarter as the Spartans went into the halftime break leading 49-42.

Tsinghua gathered momentum in the third quarter as they outscored TWU 27-26 to make the score 75-69 for the Spartans heading into the fourth quarter.

The home team continued to claw their way back into the game and with 2:43 remaining had cut the Spartan lead down to one point, trailing 88-87. With 1:18 remaining the Spartans maintained a 92-90 lead.

Out of a time out the Tsinghua squad put on a half court pressure zone. TWU was able to break the zone as they found Denny MacDonald flying down the middle of the lane to give the Spartans a four point lead, 94-90. On Tsinghua’s next possession TWU guard Mark Perrin stole an errant pass and had a breakaway dunk with 56 seconds remaining to give the Spartans a six point, 96-90, lead.

Tsinghua continued to battle and scored the next five points off of foul shots to make it a one point game, 96-95. After the made foul shot the Spartans quickly transitioned down the floor and Mark Perrin hit a pullback jumper from the foul line to give TWU a three point lead 98-95 with six seconds remaining.

Tsinghua sprinted down the floor and were able to hit a sunning lay-up to make the final 98-97 for Trinity Western.

The Spartans will now head to Shanghai for a day before taking the 12 hour flight back to Canada. TWU’s next contest is on Oct 24 when they will host Warner Pacific at the Langley Events Centre. The Spartans open Canada West Conference action on Friday and Saturday, November 1 and 2 when the host the University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge. Both games will be broadcasted on canadawest.tv.

Game Notes: TWU finished the game committing 27 fouls, while Tsinghua had 16… This is the second time in three years that the Spartans men’s basketball team has toured China. Their record now stands at an unbeaten 5-0-1.
