TWU Spartans (0) vs the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes (0) - 2 Overtime

Spartans Battle to Double OT Draw

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team gave it everything they had Friday afternoon as keeper Jacob Hanson (1st yr, Powel River, BC) and the rest of the Spartans held the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes scoreless for 120 minutes of play.

However, Pacific Lutheran's keeper - Nate Wiggins (4th yr, Puyallup, WA) was up to the challenge as he made 7 saves, and the two teams battled to a 0-0 double overtime draw in their opener of the Western Baptist College Soccer Classic.

The Spartans controlled the play throughout the match as they had a number of solid scoring opportunities. They were able to knock 15 shots in the direction of the PLU net, but were unable to put one across the line.

Sean Crocker (2nd yr, midfielder/forward, Abbotsford, BC) forced the PLU keeper to make a spectacular save when he made a beautiful volley from just outside the 10-yard mark and the Spartans almost had the victory in regulation as the referee called back a goal by midfielder Paul Ballard (1st yr, defender, Port Coquitlam, BC).

Trinity Western's solid offense was matched equally with a stingy defense as TWU limited PLU to only 2 shots on the Spartan net.

"We created some spectacular scoring opportunities, which I was very glad to see," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "We had great work and great hustle today. The only thing that we lacked was a finishing touch around the net. Had we broken the barrier we probably could have notched 3 or 4 goals."

The Spartans will play George Fox College Saturday afternoon at 12 noon to close out the Western Baptist College Soccer Classic.
