TWU Spartans (1) vs the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (3)

Spartans Battle

Langley, British Columbia - Trinity Western University's men's soccer team found out quickly what it means to play in the Canada West division of the CIS (formerly CIAU). The Thunderbirds jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead and were able to take advantage of Spartan miscues on their way to a 3-1 victory.

"The first half showed that we were nervous and we did not play the ball well," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "But the good thing is that there were points were we started to play the ball well.

"How this season goes is going to depend on how quickly the freshmen get used to the pace of this league and get their confidence up so that they can play. They are capable of playing at this level, however they were a little nervous playing in front of the big crowd tonight," added Alderson.

The UBC Thunderbirds took less then a minute to open a 1-0 lead over the Spartans. UBC defender Rob Hall (4th yr, Richmond, BC) took a deflected ball on the left side of the box, pushed the ball to get an angle and pounded the ball into the lower right corner of the Spartan net.

UBC continued to pressure the Spartans for the remainder of the half, but the Spartans started to gel after their earlier miscue and were able to keep the Thunderbirds from increasing their lead.

It took almost a full 45 minutes before the Spartans finally got a legitimate scoring opportunity. In the 45 minute Sean Crocker (2nd yr, midfielder, Abbotsford, BC) had a direct kick from 20 feet outside the left side of the UBC box. Crocker tied the match up as he played a beautiful ball that bent into the top right corner of the net.

The two teams battled for control for the first 20 minutes of the second half, with neither team developing any kind of sustained momentum.

The momentum finally turned in the favor of the Thunderbirds in the 73rd minute, when UBC's Terry Bell (1st yr, midfielder/striker, Courtenay, BC) took advantage of a Spartan miscue in the defensive box. Bell gained control of the free ball just inside the left side of the box and made no mistake to put the Thunderbirds up 2-1.

UBC notched their third goal of the game in the 82nd minute. Terry Bell crossed the ball threw the box to teammate Darren Prentice (2nd yr, midfielder, White Rock, BC). Prentice was left one on one with Spartan keeper Rusty Rosen (3rd yr, Chicago, IL). Rosen had no chance as Prentice got an angle and put the ball into the open net.

"It was exciting to get the first game under our belt, we know what were up against and we definitely did not play our best game tonight, so we have good stuff ahead of us and we are going to make it exciting this year," said Alderson.

The Thunderbirds out shot the Spartans 9-5. With UBC's keeper making 2 saves and TWU's keeper making 4. Both keepers played the full 90 minutes.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Victoria on Saturday, September 15. Game time is set for 2:00 PM at Trinity Western University.
