TWU Spartans (0) vs University of Victoria Vikes (1)

A Matter of Inches

Langley, British Columbia - Trinity Western University's men's soccer team was within inches of gaining their first points in Canada West league play Saturday afternoon.

A shot by University of Victoria's Sean Beattistoni (2nd yr, midfielder, Victoria, BC) ricocheted off of the cross bar and went straight down, bouncing just inside of the Spartans goal line just before TWU keeper Rusty Rosen (3rd yr, Chicago, IL) could gather in the ball. After the referee confirmed with the linesman the goal stood, and the single score of the afternoon gave the defending Canada West champions a 1-0 win over the Spartans.

The Spartans played a better match today. They held their own with Vikes for almost the entire first half. The Vikes goal in the 42nd minute, took the wind out of Trinity Western, but Spartans regrouped and came out strong in the second half.

"The good thing about today's game is that we were right in the hunt. We battled hard for 90 minutes and our effort was where it needed to be," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "We still have a couple of things to sort out as far as positioning goes, but those things can be fixed, so the future looks really good for us."

Unfortunately for TWU, despite a number of quality chances in the second half, they were unable to put the ball past UVIC's Jordan Robinson (3rd yr, keeper, Shawnigan Lake, BC) and the Spartans had to settle with the 1 goal defeat.

"Today's game gives us good indication that we will be in every game all year long. We just need to make sure that we do not get discouraged going 0-2 so early in the year," said Alderson. "If we continue to battle like this some of the results are going to go our way."

TWU's keeper Rusty Rosen, who had no chance on the lone goal, played a spectacular match, turning away the Vikes on numerous occasions in the second half. For his efforts Rosen was named the "Husky Oil" Spartan of the Game.

This week the Spartans will test themselves on the road when they will face the University of Saskatchewan (Fri) and the University of Edmonton (Sun). The game in Saskatoon is set for 5 PM on Friday, September 21.
