TWU Spartans (1) vs the Simon Fraser University Clan (3)

Slow Start Slams Spartans

Langley, British Columbia - Simon Fraser University's Kevin Crouch (2nd yr, forward, North Vancouver, BC) scored two goals in the first half (8th, 28th) to help the Clan defeat the Trinity Western University Spartans 3-1 Tuesday night in men's soccer action at TWU.

The Clan took full advantage of a slow start by the Spartans as they netted goals in the 8th, 23rd and 28th of the first half. The Spartans responded late in the half as Ryan Shantz (3rd yr, midfielder, Dalmeny, SK) scored in the 40th minute, but the lead was too big for the Spartans to overcome as the Clan cruised to a 3-1 victory.

"In the first 30 minutes they really took it too us," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "We are good enough to stay in a match, and there is hope and promise in that we are able to curb a teams attack. But the issue is that we need to come out from the starting whistle and make things happen, we need to make teams work and earn a victory, rather than just giving them the win and staying close the rest of the game."

The Clan's third goal was scored by Marius Lundhaug (2nd yr, forward, Oslo, Norway) in the 23rd minute.

The win improves the Clan's record to 4-4-0 while the loss drops the Spartans to 3-5-1.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Saskatchewan on Friday, September 21. Game time is set for 5:00 PM in Saskatoon, SK.
