TWU Spartans (1) vs. the University of Alberta Golden Bears (3)

Da Bears...

Langley, British Columbia - The visiting University of Alberta Golden Bears tasted blood Saturday at Trinity Western University, and they took full advantage of their situation earning a 3-1 victory in men's soccer action.

The Bears jumped out in front of the Spartans early with a goal by Jordan Gillespie (2nd yr, midfielder, Saskatoon, SK) in the 9th minute. Fortunately for the Spartans they started to settle down after the goal and as the half wore on they started to take the play to Alberta.

"We broke down their defense about four times in the first half, in ways that it is tough to break a team down," said Alderson. "So that was really exciting for us, and created some positive for us even though we were down 1-0 in the first half."

The second half started out well for the Spartans as they continually put pressure on the Bears. Finally in the 60th minute the Spartans were able to tie the match off of a direct kick from just outside the box. TWU midfielder Sean Crocker 2nd yr, midfielder, Abbotsford, BC) took the kick and bent it around the right side of the Alberta wall and into the top right corner of the Golden Bear net.

The goal sparked the Spartans as they continued to push the pace in the Alberta end. Unfortunately for TWU a miscue in the midfield allowed the ball out of the Bears end of the field. Alberta took full advantage of the situation as they quickly negotiated a corner kick in the 67th minute. Alberta's Sean Myskin (4th yr, midfielder, Edmonton, AB) crossed the ball to teammate Neil Morrow (2nd yr, defender, Edmonton, AB), who deflected the ball into the top of the Spartan net to give Alberta a 2-1 lead.

Realizing that the Spartans were disheartened by the goal the Golden Bears seized the moment and applied even more pressure to the Spartan defenders. Less then 7 minutes later Alberta sealed the victory when Hilaire Kamden (1st yr, midfielder, Doula, CAM) forced TWU keeper out of his net. Kamden pushed the ball to teammate Matt Raulick (2nd yr, defender, Westbank, BC) who took the pass and placed it easily into the open Spartan net.

"The second half breakdown was the backbreaker for us," said Alderson. "Because, although we worked hard today we were not able to play with the same heart and enthusiasm that we did against Saskatchewan."

The loss drops the Spartans to 1-4-1 in Canada West league play, while the win moves the Golden Bears to 3-0-1.

Next up for the Spartans is in Victoria, BC against the University of Victoria on Monday, October 8. Game time is set for 2:00 PM.
