Spartans Settle For Tie in Quality Outing

Langley, British Columbia - Trinity Western University men's soccer team played one of their best games of the year in Monday night's 1-1 tie with the Transylvania University Pioneers. The Spartans played well enough to win the match, as they developed a number of quality scoring opportunities and were able to consistently put pressure on the Pioneer defenders. Unfortunately for TWU, Transylvania was able to capitalize on a scoring opportunity late in the match and the Spartans had to settle for the tie.

After a number of opportunities early on the Spartans Drew Roddy (1st yr, forward, Orono, MN) opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he headed the ball past Pioneer keeper James Carpenter (4th yr, Louisville, KY). Spartan teammate Brian Scrivens (2nd yr, forward, Langley, BC) set up the goal when he placed a perfect header high to Roddy who was situated in the center of the box. Roddy then went high to beat the defenders to the ball, giving the Spartans a 1-goal lead.

The Spartans continued to pressure the Pioneers throughout the end of the first half and well into the second half of the match.

"The first half of tonight's game was probably one of the best halves that we have had this season," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "We were able to knock the ball around and create quality opportunities for our forwards."

After thwarting a number of Spartan opportunities, it was only a matter of time before the Pioneers would get a quality opportunity of their own. It finally came in the 30th minute of the second half when the Pioneers broke in on Jacob Hanson (1st yr, keeper, Powell River, BC) and forced him to make a sliding stop to deflect the ball out of bounds. On the ensuing corner, Pioneer forward Ty Smith (4th yr, forward, Lexington, KY) crossed the ball all the way across to the right post where teammate Jonathan Kincheloe (1st yr, midfield/forward, Lexington, KY) was waiting. Kincheloe went high into the air to head the ball into the upper right corner of the net and tie the match at 1-1.

The Spartans continued to challenge the Pioneer defenders as they buzzed around Transylvania's net for the final 15 minutes of the match. But try as they might they were unable to get the go ahead goal. In the end it was a bittersweet game for the Spartans. They played one of their better matches, but were forced to settle with the tie.

The Spartans are now off to Alberta for a 2 game road trip October 18-20. They play the University of Lethbridge on Oct 18 and the University of Calgary on October 20. The Spartans will need wins in both matches if they are to keep their play-off hopes alive.
