Playoff Hopes Dim, But Light Still On

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team kept their slim play-off hopes alive Friday with a solid 2-1 victory over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

The Spartans started strong and notched their first goal of the match in the 8th minute. TWU forward Lee Ellis (1st yr, defender, Langley, BC) scored his first goal of the season and put the Spartans up 1 when he struck a beautiful ball from 30 yards out that sailed into the top of the Lethbridge net.

Fourteen minutes later, TWU's Sean Crocker (2nd yr, midfielder, Abbotsford, BC) scored what proved to be the game winner. On a diagonal run, Crocker took a cross from teammate Brian Scrivens (2nd yr, forward, Langley, BC) and finished the play with his 3rd goal of the season, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead. The Spartans continued to control the play through the remainder of the half but were unable to get another marker and finished the half up 2-0.

Going into the second half down 2-0 the Pronghorns came out strong for the final 45 minutes, and carried the play to the Spartans for a good portion of the half.

Lethbridge just missed two goals early and midway through the half, but the TWU crossbar kept Lethbridge off of the board. The Pronghorns made it interesting in the final minutes when Mitch Duke scored in the 85th minute to cut the Spartan lead to 2-1. But that was as close as the Pronghorns would get as the Spartans won their first road game in Canada West and kept their play-off hopes alive for the final 3 games of the season.

"It was a solid, gutsy team effort today," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "I'm happy that we got our first road win and glad to still be in the hunt for the play-offs."

The win moves the Spartans record to 2-5-2 just 5 points behind the 4th place UBC Thunderbirds and Calgary Dinos.

Next up for the Spartans is a do or die match at the University of Calgary. A win by the Dinos will eliminate the Spartans from play-off contention. Game time on Saturday, October 20 is set for 2:00 PM at U of C.
