Spartans Playing Spoilers

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team (3-6-2) may be eliminated from the playoffs, but don't tell them that their games do not matter, just ask the University of Calgary Dinos (6-4-0).

The Dinos came into Trinity Western University Thursday night in hopes of securing a playoff spot; instead they found themselves of the wrong end of a 1-0 loss and looking at the possibility of being eliminated from post-season contention. .

The Spartans came out tonight full of heart and desire and took the match to the Dinos for most of the first half. After pushing the play into the Calgary end the Spartans caught a break in the 30th minute when Dino keeper Doug Bourne misplayed a ball. TWU midfielder Sean Crocker (2nd yr, Abbotsford, BC) quickly jumped on the loose ball and scored his 4th goal of the season to put the Spartans up 1-0.

"We did a lot of things very well in the first half. We defended tenaciously, we distributed the ball well we attacked with numbers," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. We were able to get the ball into the box with a number of players attacking, which resulted in a scramble in front of the net and that gave us the opportunity to score."

The half ended with the Spartans up 1-0, but the second half saw a different Dino team emerge from the locker room.

The Dinos knowing that their hopes for a play-off spot loomed in the balance, took the game to the Spartans for the entire 45+ minutes of the second half. But thanks to some stellar goaltending from TWU keeper Jacob Hanson (1st yr, Powell River, BC) the Spartans were able to keep the Dinos off of the score sheet.

Hanson made a number of spectacular diving stops late in the match to record his first shutout of the season.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday, October 27. Game time at TWU is set for 2:00 PM.
