Spartans End Season Flying High

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team did not start their inaugural season in the CIS with a bang, but they sure did finish with one.

The Spartans closed out their Canada West season Saturday with an impressive 5-0 win over the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. After starting the season 0-6-1 the Spartans showed that they belong by closing out the season with 3 wins, 1 tie and a loss, winning 3 of their last 4 games.

"We have a very young team and in our first year, we are kind of an expansion team, so it was absolutely exciting that we finished up the season the way we did. It shows that we got used to playing at the higher level in Canada West," said TWU head Coach Al Alderson. "I'm looking forward to next year, our young team got a lot of experience this season, so we have a very strong base to build the future on."

In today's match the Spartans jumped out in front early on a pretty goal in the 4th minute by TWU forward Brian Scivens (2nd yr, forward, Langley, BC). The two teams battled for possession and exchanged scoring opportunities for the remainder of the half, but neither was able to take control as they finished the first 45 with TWU up 1-0.

The second half saw the Spartans start to control the play. Then in 63rd minute, Sean Crocker (2nd yr, midfielder, Abbotsford, BC) set off an explosion of Spartan goals. The Spartans never allowed Lethbridge to get out of their end as they potted 4 goals in 22 minutes to seal the victory. Closing out the goal scoring for the Spartans were Jason Jorgenson (4th yr, midfielder, Bellingham, WA) in the 68th minute, Paul Ballard (1st yr, midfielder, Port Coquitlam, BC) in the 77th minute and Brian Scrivens with his second goal in the 85th minute.

Although the Spartans will finish out of the play-offs, it looks like they will be tied with the University of Saskatchewan for 5th place in Canada West. The two teams are currently tied with 14 points, but the Huskies have one more game to play against the first place University of Alberta Golden Bears.
