Spartans Drop Birds to Open Canada West

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team have now run their unbeaten string to nine games as they opened Canada West league play with a 1-0 victory over the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Thursday night at UBC. The win moves the Spartan record to 1-0 in league play and an impressive 8-0-1 overall.

TWU's Mike Riehl (1st year, midfield, Abbotsford, BC) notched the lone goal of the match in the 84th minute. Riehl scored the winner when he took a pass from teammate Nic Perugini (1st yr, midfield, Montreal, PQ), pulled it back to his left foot and from twenty-five yards out hammered a dipping ball over UBC keeper Dan Holloway. Holloway was put in a difficult position as he had just subbed into the match after an injury to the Thunderbirds starting keeper Julian Phillips.

TWU keeper Chris Cecil (3rd yr, Abbotsford, BC) was a standout in today's match. He was able to thwart the Thunderbirds on a number of quality chances as he earned his third complete game shutout of the season.

"It was a very solid game for us tonight and we are very happy to get a win at UBC to start Canada West," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "Our back line was solid and Chris came up big for us when we needed him."

It took both teams a considerable amount of time to get going tonight. But once the two offences kicked in around the 65th minute it was end-to-end action. In the 67th minute Cecil stoned UBC forward Darren Prentice, moments later the Spartans Trevor Rosencrans (5th yr, midfield, Delta, BC) and Brian Scrivens (4th yr, forward, Langley, BC) were turned away on partial breakaways. Then in the 75th minute UBC's Adrian Sanders and Aaron Richer were both denied by Cecil.

The Thunderbirds had an opportunity late but were unable to find the back of the Spartan net.

The Spartans now return home to host the University of Victoria on Saturday, September 13. Game time at TWU is set for 4:15 pm.

Match notes: TWU outshot the T-Birds, 11-10, but TWU keeper Chris Cecil made 7 saves to UBC's 3...Cecil has now gone 240 minutes without giving up a goal...
