TWU Spartans (1) vs the University of Alberta Golden Bears (2)

Well Done

Saskatoon, SK - A year ago the Trinity Western University men's soccer team was on the outside watching the Canada West soccer championships. What a difference a year makes. This season the Spartans went into the championship as the number one team in the division and the third ranked team in the CIS.

The Spartans earned their place in today's gold medal match with a stunning 2-1 OT win over Saskatchewan on Friday. Their opponents, the #5 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears earned their birth with a 4-0 victory over the University of British Columbia. Unfortunately, one of the two top teams in the nation had to lose today.

In the end it was the Spartans' whose dream of a CIS banner came to an end on the frozen tundra in Saskatoon, SK. Two of the best teams in the nation locked horns for ninety minutes but in the end it was the Spartans who came
out on the short end of a 2-1 score.

"Both teams battled hard on an icy pitch, and one very good team is not going to win, unfortunately it was us," said TWU head coach Al Alderson.

Early in the first half the Spartans were all over the Golden Bears. TWU played inspired soccer, a team well deserving of its national ranking. The Spartans had a number of quality scoring opportunities in the first half, which included two break-a-ways.

But the Golden Bears were the ones that jumped out in front early. Alberta opened the scoring in the 26th minute on a goal by Jordan Gillespie.

The Spartans continued to press and were rewarded in the 37th minute when Paul Ballard headed a ball into the box to Jason Flint. Flint took the pass in the air and found the middle top portion of the Bears' net. Flint's goal sent the two teams into the break tied at 1-1.

The match remained tied until the 82nd minute. Alberta took advantage of a throw in opportunity that caught the Spartans off guard. "We thought it was our throw in," said Alderson.

With the Spartans off balance Alberta's Jordan Gillespie found teammate John Castrillon alone in the box. Castrillon made no mistake as he notched the game winner.

TWU pressed to come back but the Spartans were unable to get past a drawn in Alberta defense and were held scoreless over the final minutes. The win gives the Golden Bears the lone Canada West birth at the CIS National Championships.

Match Notes: The Spartans finish the season with a record of 17-3-3 ... TWU midfielder James Riehl suffered a dislocated shoulder during the match...Today's loss was only the third of the season for the Spartans and the second to the Golden Bears...Chris Cecil played the full ninety minutes in net for the Spartans...
