TWU Spartans (2) vs. the University of Western Ontario Mustangs (1)

Spartans Top 2003 CIS Semi-Finalist Mustangs

London, ON - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team made it two wins in a row with a 2-1 victory over the University of Western Ontario Mustangs. The Sunday afternoon match in London, ON pitted the 2003 Canada West divisional champions against the 2003 OUA champions (4th in CIS).

"Western is a good aggressive team and I was pleased that we were able to match their play, even with our back line being short handed," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. "We had a number of players playing out of position and they did a great job in helping us contain the Western forwards."

The Spartans struck early when Drew Roddy (4th yr, forward, Orono, MN) tackled a Western player, secured the ball and played it to teammate Jason Flint (2nd yr, forward, Abbotsford, BC). Flint took the ball, beat a defender and then slotted the ball home to give TWU a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the match.

Western tied the match in 25th minute when Kyle Washington played a through ball to teammate Darrek Battin. Battin took the pass and placed it neatly into the bottom right corner of the Spartan net.

Seventeen minutes into the second half (62nd) TWU's Josh McCaig (3rd yr, forward, Mission, BC) got the game winner off of a nice buildup by the Spartans. The play started with Roddy finding an open Travis Hill (5th yr, midfield, Vancouver, WA), who then moved the ball over to McCaig. McCaig took the pass made a nice move to beat a defender and then seeing the keeper off of his line chipped the ball softly into the top left corner of the net.

Today's match was the first of a six-match swing through southern Ontario and Quebec. Of the six matches, three are against teams from last years CIS national championships - Western, Concordia and Montreal. Next up for the Spartans is at the University of Toronto. Match time on Monday, August 30 is set for 6:00 pm.
