TWU Spartans (2) at Concordia University Cavaliers-Portland (1) –OT

Spartans Extend Streak to Three with OT win
Rookie Defender Stefan Leslie nets golden winner

PORTLAND, Oregon - The Trinity Western University men’s soccer team evened their record at 3-3 with a 2-1 overtime victory over Concordia University Tuesday night in Portland, Oregon. After opening the preseason with a tough NCAA Division I schedule the Spartans have now won three in a row. The match was the season opener for the NAIA Division I Cavaliers.

“It was a great game for us, It’s always good to win on the road,” said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. “I was pleased with the way that we responded when Concordia tied the match. We increased are level of play and we were rewarded with the golden goal.”

TWU defender Stefan Leslie (1st year, Burnaby, B.C.) got his first goal as a Spartan when he hit a shot into the top of net from about 15 yards out on the left side with 1:05 left in the first overtime. The golden goal was assisted by Mustafa Demirci (3rd year, Ankara, Turkey) and Josip Maras (4th year, Burnaby, B.C.).

Trinity Western broke a scoreless tie at the 54:56 minute of the second half on an unassisted goal by Chris Trauter (3rd year, midfield, Langley, B.C.) from about 20 yards outside the net.

The Cavaliers tied the score with 18:32 left in regulation on a goal by Mirzet Sacirovic. Sacirovic’s shot from 15 yards out found the net just inside the left post. Dan Macaya assisted on the goal.

Next up for the Spartans is Wednesday afternoon at Evergreen State College. Match time in Olympia, Wash. is scheduled to kick-off at 4:00 pm. The Cavaliers host the University of British Columbia on Friday, starting at 2:00 p.m. on the Concordia field.

Match Notes: both teams had 13 shots directed towards their opponents net, with TWU holding the edge 7-5 for shots on goal...TWU’s Nick Perugini (4th year, midfield, Montreal, Que.) led all players with three shots on goal...TWU keeper Tyler DeJong (2nd year, Langley, B.C.) played the full match – 98:55 for the Spartans, while Garrett Staples played the full match for the Cavaliers...TWU has two more pre-season matches before the start Canada West Conference play on Thursday, September 7 when they will host the University of Victoria Vikes...
