TWU Spartans (4) vs. the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (0)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Spartans Extend Winning Streak to Five
Kekec shines in 4-0 win over Huskies

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– Forward Adrian Kekec’s (3rd year, Burnaby) is showing that he is ready to rewrite the Trinity Western University men’s soccer record book. The Capilano College transfer had another stellar day as he scored three times to lead the Spartans to a 4-0 win over the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday afternoon at TWU’s Spartan field. The hat-trick gives him eight goals on the season and puts him just one shy of the TWU single season goal scoring record of nine, which is held by five TWU players – most recently Drew Roddy in the 2005-06 season.

TWU started strong and after just 18 minutes the Spartans held a 8-0 edge in shots. But Saskatchewan’s defense and keeper Derrick Ng (2nd year, Saskatoon) were able to keep TWU of the scoresheet.

The Huskies had a great opportunity to open the scoring in the 22nd minute. Saskatchewan was awarded a penalty kick after Brandon Ferridge’s (2nd year, midfield/forward, Ebeneezer, Sask.) shot was blocked by a TWU defenders hand.  Brendan Garritty (4th year, midfield/forward, Saskatoon, Sask.) then stepped up to take the penalty kick. Garritty’s shot was headed to the lower right corner of the Spartan net, but TWU keeper Tyler DeJong (2nd year, Abbotsford) as able to get across and make the save to keep the match scoreless.

Spurred on by the play the Spartans quickly attacked and in the 25th minute forward Jason Flint (4th year, Surrey) gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

Saskatchewan out-shot TWU 2-1 over the final minutes of the half but they were unable to get the equalizer.

The second half was the Adrian Kekec show. Kekec scored his first goal in the 57th minute, his second in the 65th and his third in the 68th minute.

His final goal was one for the highlight reel. TWU defender Stefan Leslie (1st year, Surrey) carried the ball from midfield down the right side and to the edge of the Huskies box. Leslie sent a perfect pass to Kekec, who was breaking into the middle of the penalty area. Kekec one-timed the pass and sent a rocket into the top right corner of the Saskatchewan net. The ball hit the corner of the cross bar and the post and ricocheted down into the lower left corner of the net. Saskatchewan keeper Simon Kluge (1st year, Saskatoon), who had entered the match 45 seconds earlier, had no chance on the shot.

The win moves the Spartans to 5-3-0 in preseason play, while the loss drops the Huskies to 1-2-3.

The Huskies start Canada West play at home against the Calgary Dinos on Friday, September 8.
TWU kick’s off their Canada West season next Thursday against the University of Victoria. Match time at TWU is set for 7:15 pm.

Match notes: TWU outshot Saskatchewan 24-7...TWU keeper Tyler DeJong made two saves and played the full ninety for the Spartans...Saskatchewan split the net-minding duties between Derrick Ng (67 minutes) who made four saves and Simon Kluge (23 minutes) who made one save...
