TWU Spartans (2) vs. the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (0)

For Immediate Release

Keepers combine for 17 saves in soccer shoot out

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– Trinity Western University forward Adrian Kekec (3rd year, Burnaby) tied the Spartans’ single-season scoring record, with his ninth of the season, but it was the goalkeepers that stole the show Friday night at TWU.

There were 17 saves made between the Spartans keeper Tyler DeJong (2nd year, Abbotsford) and University of Lethbridge Pronghorns’ keeper, Marcel Galaskiewicz (Calgary) in TWU’s 2-0 win. They may have stood 120 yards apart, but they were locked in an entertaining battle of “Can you top this.”  It was a save-for-save contest, in which Galaskiewisz edged out DeJong 11-5, with the victory going to DeJong and the Spartans. “Tyler had three great saves,” said Alderson, “and that’s what you want your goaltender to do.  He had those three times where he had to come up big and he did, and that’s fantastic to see,” said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson.

Alderson continued: “We got into their attacking third an awful lot. We weren’t as effective [there] as I would have liked us to be.  We talked about that at halftime.  In the second half, we were more creative and did a better job in the attacking third, creating some really good scoring chances, and then we ran into a goalkeeper who did a great job back there, especially in the second half.”

For their efforts Galaskiewicz and DeJong, received player of the game honors following the match.

The style of play that each team brought to the table made for an exciting display of speed, athleticism, and heart. The scoreboard may have read 2-0 at the final whistle, but the Pronghorns really challenged the sixth ranked Spartans in physical up-tempo match.

The game winning goal came on a set piece with just under five minutes to halftime. Forward Nick Perugini (4th year, Montreal) sent a cross from the left side that met with the head of Spartans’ defender Patrick Kelly.  It appeared the ball would go in off Kelly’s header, but Kekec came sliding foot-first to make the goal a sure thing, finding the back of the net for the ninth time this season.

The Pronghorn defense, backed by Galaskiewicz, finally cracked again under the Spartans’ pressure after the ninetieth minute. TWU forward Justin Cordick (4th year, Anmore), finished the scoring when he jumped on a rebound from a shot by team-mate Nathan Pogue (2nd year, Seaside, Oregon) and slotted passed Galaskiewicz.

The Spartans are looking to finish their four game stint at home on a high-note when they face the University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday, September 16: kick-off at 7:15 pm.

Match Notes: total shots had TWU out in front 23 to 10...Kekec is now tied with Spartans Josh McCaig nine goals in 2003, Jason Flint nine goals in 2004 and Drew Roddy nine goals in 2005...
