FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Spartans Drop Huskies
TWU wins battle on the Prairie

SASKATOON
– The Trinity Western University men’s soccer team moved above .500 with an intense hard fought 2-1 win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday afternoon at Griffith Stadium. The Spartans came from behind to earn their third win of the season and improve to 3-2-0 while dropping the Huskies to 1-3-1.

"I liked the way we played today," remarked Spartans coach, Al Alderson. "We knocked the ball around and played very compact...I'm very happy with the industriousness and effectiveness of our ability to create scoring chances."

Coach Bryce Chapman for the Huskies also thought the game went well. "I thought the boys played well. Trinity Western is faster and more determined. We played well in spells and now the challenge is to find consistency and play a full ninety minutes."

The Huskies Nathan Reis (Prince Albert, 4th yr.) opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Saskatchewan took advantage of a defensive error by the Spartans. The goal was assisted by Graeme MacMillan (Winnipeg, 1st yr.), who was also named Saskatchewan’s game MVP.

Patrick Kelly (Cochrane, 3rd yr.) got the Spartans on the board in the 43rd minute. The goal came off of a corner kick by Nicola Perugini (Montreal, 4th yr.). Perugini sent the ball to the far post where Kelly went high and headed the ball down and into the net. “We needed the goal so that we could be rewarded for our efforts and go into the half even,” said Alderson.

TWU’s Mustafa Demirci (Ankara, Turkey, 3rd yr.) got the game winner in the 67th minute. Demirci broke in along the right side and sent a rocket past a number of Saskatchewan defenders and into the far corner of the Huskies’ net.

The game MVP for the Spartans went to Josh McCaig (Mission, 5th yr.). "Josh did a really great job on the distributions from center of the park,” said Alderson. “He got himself into great position for second balls."

Trinity Western continues their road trip tomorrow afternoon when they face off against the University of Alberta Golden Bears Sunday afternoon in Edmonton.

Match notes: TWU’s Adrian Kekec hit two goal posts in the first half...the Spartans out shot the Huskies 18 to 9...Saskatchewan’s Derrick Ng made seven saves in the loss, while TWU’s Tyler DeJong made five saves to earn the win...
