Spartans Dominate Match with Cascades
TWU’s Adrian Kekec scores twice to break TWU single season scoring record

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia
– It wasn’t a question of ‘If’, but more a question of “When” for Trinity Western University’s Adrian Kekec.

The third year forward had kick-started his career as a Spartan by scoring nine goals in his first ten matches. But after scoring his ninth goal, to tie the TWU single season scoring record, in a 2-0 win over the University of Lethbridge, the Burnaby native had a bit of a scoring “slump” as the third year business student had been held off the score sheet in the Spartans last three matches.

But Thursday night, in the Spartans 3-0 win over the University College of the Fraser Valley Cascades, Kekec found the back of the net two times to officially move the TWU single season goal scoring mark to 11 goals.

“Adrian had a couple of posts in Saskatchewan, so he almost got the record there,” said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. “We knew that when we brought Adrian here that we had a group of guys that could get him the ball. So it’s nice to see that the combination is paying off with Adrian being able to find the back of the net, which translates to wins for us as a team.”

Trinity Western scored all three of their goals in the first half. The Spartans’ combination of Kekec and Josh McCaig (Mission) teamed up for the first two, with Abbotsford Senior grad Jason Flint (Abbotsford) netting the third in extra time. Kekec scored in the 15th and 34th minutes, with McCaig there to assist both. “Josh moved the ball real well and helped us to have a sustained attack for much of the match,” said Alderson.

Kekec’s first goal came off a Trinity Western corner kick. The cross into the box yielded a rebound, and with a scramble in the six-yard box Kekec emerged with a goal. For his second McCaig’s through ball set-up Kekec on a breakaway, with Kekec slipping it pas the keeper right side. Kekec had a chance at the hat-trick near the close of the first, but his point-blank strike hit the post.

The Cascades were forced to play a man down after Matt Hunt (Pitt Meadows) picked up his second yellow card of the match in the 52nd minute. The short-handed Cascades gave up several scoring chances. Trinity Western’s best scoring opportunity clanged off the crossbar on a shot by Nathan Pogue (Seaside, Oregon).

Cascades’ keeper Jesse Haagen (Abbotsford) never touched Pogue’s shot, but the freshman wound up making 12 saves in his third start of the season. TWU’s second year keeper Adam Alvaro (North Vancouver) made two saves to earn the shutout for the Spartans. Trinity Western ended the match out-shooting Fraser Valley 22-5.

With the win the defending Canada West champion Spartans improve to 3-2-1, while the Cascades remain winless at 0-5-1. “It was a great performance by our boys,” said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. “We moved the ball well all over the field which allowed us to create a number of quality scoring opportunities.”

The two squads match-up again in the home-and-home this Saturday, September 30 with the Cascades traveling to the Trinity Western campus in Langley. The two teams will kick off at 7:15 p.m.  The Spartan women and the Cascade women will get things started at 5 p.m.

Match notes: This is the first league meeting between the two schools since October 14, 2000 when TWU and UCFV were members of the BCCAA. That Saturday afternoon the Spartans blanked the Cascades 4-0... a total of eight yellow cards were issued in the game, six of those against Fraser Valley... Josh McCaig was player of the game for the Spartans, Graham Sherk (Langley) earning honours for Fraser Valley... attendance was 361.
