TWU Spartans (2) at the University of Victoria (1)

TWU gets win on the Island for first time since entering Canada West

– It was six years in the making, but the Trinity Western University men’s soccer team finally has a conference win against the University of Victoria on their home turf. The Vikes and Spartans battled hard at each other as playoff implications were on the line, but it was the defending Canada West champion Spartans who were to leave the field with a 2-1 victory.

”Today’s match was remarkably similar to yesterday’s; we played really well in the first half, but we couldn’t get anything going in the second half. Fortunately today we were able to hold on for the win,” said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. “The boys could have come out flat today, but they didn’t and I’m proud of how they responded after a tough loss yesterday.”

The win moves the Spartans to 6-3-1 and into a third place tie with the University of Calgary. The loss drops the Vikes to 3-5-2 and leaves them eight points behind TWU and Calgary for the final playoff position. The Vikes needed a win today to keep the team within striking distance of the final playoff spot.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead at the 15-minute mark with the first goal of the game.  A corner kick from midfielder Nick Perugini (4th year, Montreal) clipped the foot a Vikes forward and bounced into the net.

Mustafa Demirci’s (3rd year, Ankara, Turkey) header into the net in the 39th minute gave TWU a 2-0 lead. Striding down the right side of the field, Diaz Kambere (4th year, Surrey, B.C.) took control of the ball and after streaking past the Vikes defenders, sent the ball sailing over to the far post. Demirci broke through the back line and throwing his body forward and headed the ball deep into the net. “Mustafa’s goal was a beauty,” said Alderson. “The way the play developed and the way it finished was beautiful.”

Victoria responded only four minutes later when Kyle Langseth (3rd year, Grayling, Mich.) picked up the loose ball off a scramble and buried it in from directly in to make the score 2-1.

Trinity Western could have taken the score to 3-1 mid-way through the half.  A series of chances by the Spartans were thwarted by Vikes keeper Dan Kilpatrick (1st year, Winnipeg), with the help of some timely blocks from the Vikes defenders.

Victoria pressed hard over the final minutes as they peppered the Spartan backfield looking for the equalizer but were unable to level the score.  Trinity Western held on for a 2-1 victory.

Next up for the Spartans is at the University of Lethbridge on Saturday, October 21, followed by a match at the University of Calgary on Sunday, October 22.

Match Notes: TWU out-shot Victoria seven to four and held the edge in corner kicks five to four...Dan Kilpatrick played the full 90 minutes in net for the Vikes, while Adam Alvaro (2nd year, North Vancouver) played 87 minutes for the Spartans as an injury forced him to give way to Tyler DeJong (2nd year, Langley) for the final three minutes...TWU lifetime conference record against Victoria is 1-4-1 at Victoria and 4-6-2 overall...
