Game 2: TWU Spartans @ Alberta Golden Bears
1:00 p.m. Foote Field

TWU will play Calgary for berth in CIS Nationals

- It’s only fitting that the Trinity Western Spartans be the first blemish on the 2006 University of Alberta Golden Bears soccer record as the Spartans defeated the Bears 2-0 in game two of the Canada West men’s soccer championship at Foote Field in Edmonton.  The Spartan win means they will advance to face the Calgary Dinos for Canada West supremacy Sunday afternoon.

The loss is #1 ranked Alberta’s first setback of the season after posting a 9-0-5 regular season record.  Two of their five ties came in contests against TWU, who of late have played the Bears tough.  Len Vickery’s side was able to find a solution in the regular season for all other BC based schools; defeating defending CIS champion UBC and Victoria twice, but never solving the Spartans defensive puzzle.

The first half featured a bevy of chances as each team pressured the other for the all-important first goal.  Contrasted with the day’s earlier match between UBC and Calgary, whose first half played out more like a game of tennis, the Bears and Spartans took advantage of the fast surface at Foote Field, playing the ball on the ground with greater control.

Trinity Western got off to a fast start when Alberta starting goalie Daniel Gusberti spilled a high cross in the Alberta 18-yard box to Nathan Pogue who had an empty net to shoot at, but found the woodwork instead, just 34 seconds into the game.
The Bears answered that chance when fleet-footed defender Eddy Sidra made a searing run in the 14th minute down the right side, past his defender and into the TWU 18-yard box where his shot rose over the bar for a goal kick.

Alberta continued the pressure five minutes later when Alex Campos fired a long range shot from 20 yards out that forced Spartans’ ‘keeper Tyler DeJong to tip the ball over the net.  On the ensuing corner kick, Bears’ striker John Konye volleyed a loose ball inside the 18-yard box wide of the mark.

It was the Spartans who were rewarded first when rookie defender Stefan Leslie, a member of the Vancouver Whitecaps in the summer, stripped a Bear of the ball in Alberta territory, waltzed around another a fired a beautiful 25-yard rocket over Gusberti and into the top left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead 10 minutes before the half.

Trinity increased their lead early in the second half when Adrian Kekec shrugged off two Alberta defenders outside the 18-yard box and chipped the ball over the on rushing Gusberti and into the empty net in the 54th minute.
Hilaire Kamdem’s 61st minute free kick deep in the TWU zone found its way out to Michael Kennedy at the top of the box and his hard one-timer forced DeJong into making a tough save.  Kennedy became involved in some rough play after the whistle and was red carded for his activities.  The sending off means the veteran Kennedy will have to miss Alberta’s next game against the UBC Thunderbirds for Canada West bronze.

Calgary and TWU will battle for Canada West gold and the final berth into the CIS men’s soccer finals, November 9-12 in Edmonton.  Alberta and UBC will play at 11:00 a.m. MST, while Calgary and TWU will tangle at 1:15 p.m., both games at Foote Field.
