Men’s Soccer TWU 4 – Calgary 1
Women’s Soccer TWU 1 – UBC 0

MIRROR – MIRROR -Spartans Soccer Sweep Canada West.

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– The Trinity Western University men’s and women’s soccer teams are both headed to this years CIS National Championships after the two squads won respective Canada West Gold medals. The women defeated the University of British 1-0 in a tightly contested contest in Regina. The men came out flying and used a 3-0 first half lead to defeat the University of Calgary 4-1 this afternoon in Edmonton.

The two teams traveled nearly identical paths on their way to their respective championships. Both teams were ranked #4 going into the tournament. Both teams defeated the #1 ranked team’s in the CIS to get to the gold medal match. And it is the second Canada West title for both teams, with the men winning last year and the women winning in 2004 when they also won TWU’s first CIS national championship.

“From the beginning of the year we have focused on a five step process. We have accomplished the first two steps, by getting to the Canada West Championships and by winning the gold medal,” said TWU Head Men’s Coach Al Alderson. “The next three steps are our three games at the CIS National Championships.”

The Spartan men entered the season with high expectations after last season title, but this season has been an up and down one for TWU. The Spartans showed signs of brilliance at times, going on a 5-1-1 in an impressive stretch in the middle of the season. But have also struggled to put things together as TWU entered the post season going 0-2-1 over their final three games. However, TWU looks to be peaking at the right time. They knocked of CIS #1 ranked Alberta 2-0 on Saturday and dominated their match today, winning 4-1 over #8 ranked Calgary.

All season we’ve talked about learning ever time out, so that when big games came we would be able to play to our potential,” said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. “We didn’t play the best that we can play this weekend, but we did play great. Both games were great for us because we put to use the things that we have been working on and that we have talked about all season.”

TWU will stay and train in Edmonton for the next three days as the get ready for the CIS Championships, which begin on Thursday at the University of Alberta.

The last school to win both Canada West soccer titles in the same year was the University of Victoria. The Vikes accomplished the feet in 2000.
