TWU Spartans (3) at the Simon Fraser University Clan (4)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KEKEC BREAKS TWU SCORING RECORD

BURNABY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University fourth year forward Adrian Kekec now stands alone for most career goals scored by a Spartan men's soccer player. The Burnaby, B.C. native broke the record when he scored his 24th career goal in the Spartans 4-3 non-conference loss to Simon Fraser University Tuesday night in Burnaby, B.C.

Kekec passed Josh McCaig (Mission, B.C., 2002-2007) with TWU's first goal in the 32nd minute. TWU's Nathan Pogue (3rd year, forward, Seaside, Ore.) set up the record goal when he stole the ball off a Clan player at midfield and fed the speedy Kekec up the right side.

Other goal scorers for the Spartans were Jake Jorgensen (1st year, defender, Bellingham, Wash.) in the 67th minute off of a free kick and Daniel Lowen (1st year, forward, Langley, B.C.) in the 89th minute when he tipped in a long shot from Jorgensen.

The Clan led 2-0 at the half after getting markers from Lucas Barrett in the 15th minute and Reece Miles in the 30th minute. SFU matched their first half production in the final 45 with Barrett's second goal on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute and Josh Bennett's goal in the 72nd minute.

TWU keepers Andrew Kowan (1st year, Richmond, B.C.) and Tyler DeJong (3rd year, Abbotsford, B.C.) split the goal tending duties for the Spartans, while SFU's Thomas Lindley played the full 90 for the Clan.

"I'm quite happy with our result. We got to play a lot of the players who don't usually get time. And as a result we were able see what they are capable of doing against a quality opponent," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "It is always important to be able to have games like this because you need to be able to see and know what your young players are able to do in game situations."

The third ranked Spartans, who sits on top of the Canada West standings with 21 points, now have ten days off before they resume Canada West conference action on Sat., Oct. 13 and Sun., Oct. 14. On Sunday they will play in Edmonton against the second place (14 points) University of Alberta, and then on Sunday they will play in Saskatoon against the seventh place (8 points) University of Saskatchewan.

TWU will then return home for the final two weekends of Canada West conference play.

Match Notes: the Clan outshot the Spartans 13-5 (10-1 in first) and had the edge in shots on goal at 5-4...corner kicks were 6-2 in favour of TWU...SFU had the edge in fouls at 22-17... While the game is considered an NAIA regular season game for the Clan, it appears as an exhibition game on the Spartans schedule because of CIS regulations.
