TWU Spartans (0) at the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS FALL - CLINCH PLAY OFF SPOT

SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan (3-4-3) keeper Evan Campbell made 13 saves while facing an onslaught of Trinity Western University (8-2-0) attackers to give the Huskies an upset 1-0 win over the third ranked Spartans Sunday at Potash Corp Park in Saskatoon.

Despite dominating the play for the entire match Spartans were unable to find the back of the Huskies net. TWU outshot Saskatchewan 27-12 and had a 13-3 edge in shots on goal.

"They played very well defensively and their keeper made some big saves to keep them in the game. But other then their set piece we didn't let them have any opportunities," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. This was one that we were a little bit unlucky not to have come away with the win. It is one of those days where the ball doesn't find the net. We definitely created enough opportunities; we just weren't as sharp as we needed to be."

The Huskies only managed one shot on goal in the second half, but it proved to be enough. In the 60th minute the Huskies had a free kick deep in TWU territory. Saskatchewan's Alvaro Campos took the kick and found midfielder Josh Northey in the box. Northey headed the lone goal of the match off the TWU right post and into the Spartans net.

In the first half, Trinity Western midfielders had many chances to put the ball in the net but failed to do so thanks to saves by Saskatchewan's' Campbell. Huskies first-year midfielder Jerson Hamilton led the team's offense in the first half as he had a pair of shots on goal that were stopped by Spartan keeper Andrew Fink (1st year, Burnaby, B.C.).

The second half began scoreless with both teams on the offensive. Trinity Western's Patrick Kelly had a big opportunity to put the first point on the board but another stop by Campbell kept the game scoreless.

Following Northey's goal the rest of the game was a defensive battle for the Huskies as they fought to defend their one goal lead. The Spartans worked hard creating many opportunities for their offense but just could not put the ball in the net.

Even with the loss the Spartans were able to clinch a play-off spot. TWU now has the luxury of having the final four league matches at home.

The Spartans will open the home stand against the University of British Columbia on Friday followed by the University of Victoria on Saturday. Both matches have a 7:15 p.m. kick-off.

Match Notes: the Spartans have now made the post season for five straight seasons... TWU can clinch top spot by winning one of their four remaining games. They can also clinch with a tie providing each of the teams that are in contention tie or lose one of their remaining four matches...Winning Canada West would mean that TWU would host the Canada West Final Four beginning on Nov. 2...
