Game Recap

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia
– A late second half goal by fifth year forward Nathan Square-Briggs (Richmond, B.C.) led the No. 3 Trinity Western University Spartans to a 3-2 victory over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades in Canada West men’s soccer action Saturday at Bateman Park in Abbotsford.

The Cascades (1-4-0), who opened the season with a shutout over the Lethbridge Pronghorns, have now dropped four-straight games, while Trinity Western (3-0-2) remains unbeaten in five games and tied for top spot in Canada West with the Alberta Golden Bears.

“A 2-0 lead is the most dangerous lead in soccer and we let them play a bit and it came back to bite us. Overall it was a scrappy gritty game - everything that you would expect between Fraser Valley and Trinity [Western],” commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla. “But everyone seems to be in good shape for our match tomorrow.”

The Spartans opened the scoring in the 21st minute when forward David Rowse (St. Albert, Alta.) scored after Nathan Pogue (Seaside, Ore.) had made a beautiful run up the left side of the park and beaten Fraser Valley’s outside back. Pogue sent a shot across the front of the Cascades net, where Rouse beat everyone to the ball and slotted it into the open net.

Pogue then got his own in the 38th minute to put TWU up 2-0. The fourth year forward beat UFV’s keeper Kristjan Johannson (North Delta, B.C.) to the ball at the edge of the six, where he chipped the ball over Johannson and into the open net.

Trinity Western held that lead, and the play, until a late second-half break down. Robbie Fadden (Abbotsford, B.C.) got Fraser Valley on the board in the 78th minute. Trinity Western’s James Farenhorst (Langley, B.C.) was called for a penalty in front of the Spartans goal, and Fadden capitalized on the penalty kick.

Some nice ball movement by the Cascades earned the tying goal. Fadden moved the ball to fifth year midfielder Milan Francisty (Maple Ridge, B.C.), who found forward Josh Atebe (Mission, B.C.) for the equalizer.

It appeared the Cascades would earn a valuable point in the standings until Nathan Square-Briggs gave the Spartans the lead for good off a goalmouth scramble.

TWU keeper Andrew Fink (Burnaby, B.C.) made four stops to earn the victory, while UFV’s Johannson made three saves in the loss.

The Spartans return to action Sunday in Victoria for a match with the Vikes, while the Cascades have a home game against UBC Thunderbirds Sunday. That match will take place at noon at Exhibition Field in Chilliwack.

Match Notes: TWU outshot UFV 10-8, with both teams getting six on net…the Spartans also held the edge in corner kicks at 6-3…TWU’s Rowse led all players with three shots, two of which were on net…Square-Briggs played 35 minutes and made the most of his one attempt…
