SPARTANS CLAIM BRONZE AT SPRING CUP

VICTORIA – The Trinity Western University men’s soccer team earned the bronze medal Sunday afternoon at the University of Victoria’s Spring Cup with an impressive 7-2 win over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades.

In the consolation match the Spartans dismantled their lower mainland rivals Cascades with a 7-2 decision. Spartans striker Danfi Parker recorded the hat trick with three second half goals, part of a five-goal frame by the 2009 CIS bronze medalists.

The Spartans led 2-1 at the halftime break before Parker scored in the 50th, 64th and 72nd minutes. Other Trinity Western goals came courtesy of Nathan Rubuliak in the 28th, Nathan Square-Briggs in the 45th, and Jordan Hart in the 78th. Fraser Valley's goals came courtesy of Ethan Claibourne-Collins (42nd) and James Giebelhaus (75th).

In Saturday’s opening match the Spartans fell 1-0 in a tightly contested contest against the University British Columbia Thunderbirds.

The match, which was played early Saturday, was destined for a shootout with neither side able to break the deadlock before a 90th minute penalty kick was awarded to the T-Birds. Marco Visintin stepped up to the spot and hammered the shot past Andrew Fink into the bottom-right corner to give UBC the 1-0 win.

In the gold medal match the UBC Thunderbirds toppled the host UVic Vikes men's soccer team 2-1 (7-6 PKs) to claim the title.
