TWU Spartans (1) vs the No. 2 University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (1)

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– In one of their early tests of the season the Trinity Western University men’s soccer team battled the No. 2 University of British Columbia Thunderbirds to a 1-1 draw Friday night at Rogers Park on the TWU campus in Langley, B.C.

“In the first half our issue was that we were unable to connect passes and were our own worst enemies. Our turnovers are killing us right now,” commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla. “Overall we defended quite well. considering that we are thin on numbers this week we did well, but are disappointed as we were ten minutes away from getting a win.”

The draw moves the Spartans to 1-1-1 and the T-Birds to 2-0-1 in Canada West conference play.

TWU forward Spencer Schmidt got the Spartans on the board midway through the first half. Schmidt headed a beautiful deep cross from TWU defender James Farenhorst past Thunderbird keeper Matt Robinson to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead with 18 minutes remaining in the first half.

The lead stood up through the first half and well into the second frame.

The Spartans defence played a bend but don’t break style as the half wore on and the Thunderbirds put continuing pressure on the Spartan net. The visitors from Point Grey finally got the equalizer in the 79th minute.

The “own goal” came when UBC’s Gregory Smith broke down the right side and deep into the TWU defensive end. Smith sent a hard shot into the TWU box, which caught one of the Spartans and deflected into the TWU net to tie the match.

TWU keeper Justin Fink played the full 90 and was solid in his clearances as he made one save to earn the tie. UBC’s Robinson also played the full 90 in the draw.

The Thunderbirds finished the night with nine total shots, while the Spartans finished with four.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Alberta on Saturday, September 24 in Edmonton. Next up for the Thunderbirds is the University of Saskatchewan on Saturday, September 24 in Saskatoon.

Match Notes: TWU had three corner kicks to UBC’s four…the Spartans Schmidt was named Player of the Match for TWU, while Marco Visintin earned the honours for UBC…
