TRINITY WESTERN (2) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE FRASER VALLEY (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PARKES’ LATE GOAL LIFTS SPARTANS OVER CASCADES

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia
- Trinity Western University defender Shawn Parkes found the back of the University of the Fraser Valley net with less than four minutes remaining to lift the Spartans to a 2-1 victory over the Cascades Sunday afternoon at Bateman Park in Abbotsford, B.C.

With the victory the Spartans move to 5-3-2 and into fourth spot into Canada West with 17 points, while the loss drops the Cascades to 1-8-1 and seventh spot in CW with four points.

“Overall it was a fair result based on the quality of chances that we got,” commented TWU head coach Pat Roha. “We were a little disappointed that we did not come into the change room with a bigger lead, but we had quality goals from Dan and Shawn to get the win.”

The two teams exchanged opportunities early on, but as the first half progressed the Spartans started to take control of the contest. TWU had a number of close opportunities and near missuses and were finally rewarded in the 27th minute by a beautiful strike from forward Daniel Lowen. Lowen, who had moments before sent a header over the top bar, took a perfect feed from Brayden Gant and slotted it behind UFV keeper Mark Village.

Loewen’s first goal of the season would be the lone goal of the first 45 as the Spartans led at halftime 1-0.

In the second half, Fraser Valley came out on fire and kept pressuring the Trinity Western defence and testing TWU keeper Andrew Kowan.  The Cascades break came midway through the half when Sasa Plavsic set up Jordan Tipton who headed the ball past Kowan to tie the score at 1-1 with just under 20 minutes remaining in the match.

The Spartans regained control of the contest and as the match wound down were able to find Parkes in the 87th minute with what would be the winning goal.  Parkes took the feed from Brayden Volkenant and placed the ball past Village and into the back of the Cascades net to give the Spartans the much needed win.

TWU’s Kowan made three saves to earn the win in his first match of the Canada West season, while UFV’s Village made four saves in the Cascades loss.

The Spartans will now return home to take on the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Alberta next weekend. Match time on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22 is set for 7 p.m. at TWU’s Rogers Park.

Match notes: The Spartans outshot the Cascades 16 to eight in total attempts…TWU finished the match with an eight to four edge in corner kicks…the Spartans finished with three offsides, while the Cascades had one…22 fouls were called while each team received two yellow cards…UFV had beaten TWU 1-0 to open the Canada West season in Langley on Sept. 9…
