Game Recap

Game Recap

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
The Alberta Golden Bears scored three second half goals, erasing a one-goal halftime deficit, as they earned a 3-2 win over Trinity Western Saturday at Rogers Park.

Trailing 1-0 going into the second half, Alberta scored three times in just over 20 minutes as Marcus Johnstone had two and Brett Colvin added the third as the Golden Bears stunned the Spartans on a night when Trinity Western found itself inches shy on a several occasions.

After Trinity Western had taken a lead in the first half on a Spencer Schmidt set piece goal, the home side had oodles of scoring opportunities, especially late in the first half, but was unable to bury. Then in the second half, Spartans attackers hit the cross bar twice and the left post once as they came ever so close to changing the game’s result but ultimately were denied. Daniel Lowen scored the other goal for the Spartans.

The loss drops the Spartans record to 6-4-2 on the season as they fall to fourth place in the Canada West standings while the win improves the Bears record to 6-2-4 as they leapfrog Trinity Western into third place.

“We let them hang around and our back line lost the plot a little bit and they ended up scoring three in a row,” said Spartans coach Pat Rohla. “But overall, even when we were down by two goals, we continued to battle and created at least another five chances to score. So we learned a brutal lesson tonight that you have to finish a team when they’re down.

“Alberta can think that they played well but they stole the milk off the porch plain and simple. They countered well and got some timely goals.”

Much like in Friday night’s 4-2 win over Saskatchewan, the Spartans got off to a quick start as Schmidt opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a rocket of a free kick from just outside the box that he whipped past the Alberta wall and into the bottom left corner.

Alberta responded from there with a bit of pressure but never really challenged Spartans goalie Andrew Fink over the course of the first half as he was called upon to make just two saves in the opening 45 minutes.

With a 1-0 lead already in tow, the Spartans pushed for more late in the first half and garnered some brilliant chances but were unable to convert.

Most notably, Schmidt had a pair of close calls – one from six yards out after he received a pass from Daniel Lowen but put it just wide left in the 40th minute and another just a minute later on a shot from inside the box that Alberta goalie Jay Vetsch stopped – but couldn’t find mesh.

Early in the second half, with senior goalie Andrew Kowan now in for Fink, and thus getting to play what will likely be his final home game at Trinity Western, the Bears Johnstone delivered the equaliser in the 49th minute on a free kick from just outside the box that Kowan got a piece of, but not enough as the net bulged in the top right corner.

Then, less than nine minutes later, Johnstone gave Alberta the lead for good when he rifled a low drive off the left wing that found its way into the net in the bottom right corner.

Despite falling behind on the scoreboard, Trinity Western seemed undeterred and nearly tied it when Brayden Gant put a ball off the crossbar. Instead it was the Bears who scored next when Brett Colvin took a shot, had it blocked and then struck the rebound low and to the right for what turned out to be the game-winner.

The Spartans responded well but if it wasn’t Vetsche making diving save after diving save, it was the woodwork denying Trinity Western goals.

Finally Trinity Western broke through with a header goal from Lowen in the 89th minute and then it was a mad scramble to the finish.

The Spartans came close off a corner when a header attempt hit the left post but stayed out and in the end that was as close as they would come as they lost for the first time at Rogers Park since their home opener.

Next weekend, Trinity Western will travel to Lethbridge Saturday and Calgary Sunday to wrap up the regular season. The game in Lethbridge starts at 2:00 p.m. while the Calgary game begins at 2:15 p.m.

Alberta returns home to host Fraser Valley Saturday and Victoria Sunday. Both games are at 2:15 p.m.

Game Notes: The Spartans outshot Alberta 22-16 while both teams had eight shots on target…the Golden Bears were assessed two yellow cards: one to Christopher Roberts in the 22nd minute and the other to Alberta assistant coach Kurt Bosch after the game for “irresponsible behaviour.”
