Now in his sixth year as the Trinity Western men’s volleyball coach, Ben Josephson has developed the Spartans into one of the best volleyball programs in the country.

Since taking over the head coaching duties in 2007, after being an assistant coach from 2004 to 2007, the native of Strathmore, Alta., has not only kept the Spartans men’s volleyball tradition of excellence alive, but he has taken it to new heights.

In the first five years of his tenure as the Spartans bench boss, Josephson has guided TWU to back-to-back national titles, in 2011 and 2012, a national silver medal, in 2010, and a Canada West championship, in 2012.

And it was in that 2011-12 year that Josephson guided the Spartans to the team’s most decorative season in program history.  While earning the 2011-12 Canada West and CIS Coach of the Year honours, Josephson led TWU to a program-best 19-1 regular season record and, in doing so, captured the Canada West regular season title for the first time in Spartans history. Following that, the Spartans won the Canada West banner playoff banner and then finished the season in style by winning their second straight CIS crown.

That success was the culmination of a five-year process that started with Josephson’s first recruiting class and ended with a season in which TWU went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in the country.

Before moving to the sidelines, Josephson was a stand-out player for the Spartans from 1998 to 2003 and, in his final year, earned the school’s first ever CIS All-Canadian award while, in that same year, also being named a Canada West First Team All-Star.

Along with his work at TWU, Josephson has also coached internationally as a guest assistant with Canada’s senior team in 2009 and with Canada’s World University Games teams in 2005 and 2011.

Josephson is also the head coach for B.C.’s U21 side that will compete at the 2013 Canada Summer Games.

Josephson has a Bachelor of Human Kinetics Degree from Trinity Western and also earned a Certificate in Biblical Studies from Covenant Bible College in Strathmore. He is also an NCCP Level III certified coach. Josephson lives in Langley with his wife Jenn and son Cooper.
