Spartans Flying High as Season Nears

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's volleyball team finished the preseason with a thunderous bang as they swept the Big Kahuna All-stars 3-0 to claim the gold medal in UBC's Thunderball tournament.

Led by Tournament MOP (most outstanding player) Ben Josephson (5th yr, setter, Strathmore, AB) and tournament all-star Jason Hofer (4th yr, Outside Hitter, Kelowna, BC) the Spartans out pointed Big Kahuna 27-25, 25-18, 25-22 to take the championship match.

"Both Jason and Ben deserved to be MOP's, they both played that well," said TWU head coach Ron Pike. "As a team we played really steady. Moving Chris Meehan over to the rightside balances our attack."

Hofer finished the match with 14 kills and 8 digs, while Josephson had 37 setting assists and led both teams with 9 digs. TWU's Chris Meehan (2nd yr, Rightside, Clearwater, BC) also chipped in with 11 kills.

The Spartans finished the tournament with a record of 3-1. Tonight's win avenged an earlier 3-1 loss to Kahuna in the Spartans final game of the round robin Friday evening.

The men are now off to Manitoba for the Canada West League opener Friday, October 25.

Match Notes: Big Kahuna is made up of TWU & UBC alumni...Tournament All-stars included: Jason Hofer-TWU, Ryan Cawsey-UBC, Joe Nargi-Cal State Northridge, Jeff Warren-Big Kahuna and Mike Dalziel-Big Kahuna....Cal State took the Bronze Medal 3-1 over UBC...
