Spartans Come Back to Win in Five

Langley, British Columbia - The old saying states, "it's not how you start but how you finish." Well the Trinity Western University men's volleyball team took it to heart Friday night against the hometown University of Calgary Dinos. The Spartans started slowly, dropping the first two sets 25-22 and 25-20, but they rebounded to take the next three sets 26-24, 25-22, and 15-10 to win the match 3-2.

The pivotal set of the match was the third. Down 2-0 the Spartans made some key substitutions and went to a ball control game. Led by the passing of Jeff Van Huizan and Jaben Schalk, the Spartans rallied in the third set. After falling behind 21-19 late in the set, TWU kept their composure and tied the set at 21-21. After two sideouts TWU's Luke Bainard gave the Spartans a 23-22 lead. Calgary tied the set at 24-24, but the Spartans were determined to extend the match. TWU's Chris Roy finished the set with a kill to win 26-24, giving the Spartans new life. "Jaben and Jeff really stabilized our passing and Roy was our best player tonight," said TWU head coach Ron Pike.

The Spartans maintained control of the match taking the next set 25-22. The fifth set was all TWU. After the two teams were tied at 4-4 the Spartans broke the set open with six straight points on their way to closing out the match with a 15-10 win.

"We came into this match without our best player (Jason Hofer) and were depleted even more when Chris Meehan's injury forced him out," said TWU head coach Ron Pike. "But I am really proud of our guys for their level of concentration tonight, because we are basically the walking wounded and we were still able to gut out the win."

The two teams go at it again tomorrow night at the University of Calgary. Game time is set for 6:15 PM MST.
