TWU Spartans (0) vs the University of Alberta Golden Bears (3)
(25-18, 25-19, 28-26)

Number One!

Langley, British Columbia - If the Trinity Western University men's volleyball team was wondering what it looked like to be the best team in the nation Friday night, all they had to do was look across the net at the visiting University of Alberta Golden Bears. The unfortunate thing in rally point volleyball is that you can play nearly flawless volleyball, but it only takes a brief mental lapse for you to fall behind by two points and lose the set. Alberta outplayed the Spartans at the net, which allowed them to turn away the Spartans 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 28-26).

The Spartans have come a long way in their short tenure in the CIS. After three and a half years against the top competition in the nation, the Spartans currently find themselves ranked sixth in Canada with a legitimate chance of competing in their first national championship this March. If TWU has dreams of a national title, tonight's match was a good indicator of how good you have to be to be number one.

The pace at which Alberta functioned was too much for the Spartans for the first two sets. As the match wore on the Spartans started to raise their level of play, but Alberta still had enough left as they took the third set 28-26.

Jason Hofer led the Spartans with 12 kills, while Sandy Henderson led the Golden Bears with 11 kills.

The Spartans will get a chance tomorrow night to see if they can put a dent in the Golden Bears unblemished record (13-0, CW). Game time is set for 8:00 PM at TWU.

Match notes: Alberta outmatched TWU in Service Aces 7-3 and team blocks 11-6... each team had 39 kills...
