Spartans Gut Out Win

Langley, British Columbia - It was not their best performance on the volleyball court this season, but a win is still a win and the Spartans will take the Ws any way they can. A free-swinging UBC (3-12) squad pushed Trinity Western (7-8) for every point tonight at War Memorial gym. The 'Birds looked like they would tie the match at 2-2, before they dropped the last set 25-23 and the match 3-1 (25-19, 16-25, 25-20, 25-23).

"I'm really pleased with our gutsy performance tonight. We did not do anything that was outstanding, but we just played steady," said TWU head coach Ron Pike. "UBC played really well tonight, but it was our maturity that allowed us to take the games late in the set."

Jason Hofer (13 kills) and Chris Roy (12 kills) paced the Spartans, while Steve Corothers (13 kills), led the Thunderbirds. TWU's Jeff Van Huizen led both teams with 20 digs.

The two teams will lock horns again tomorrow night, with the game time set for 8:00 pm at UBC.

Match Notes: Ben Josephson had a solid match with 42 set assists to go with 1 block, 5 digs and 2 kills. Aside from his own kills, Josephson set all but three of the Spartan kills....UBC had a solid night at the net, recording 12 team blocks....The win keeps the #6-ranked Spartans (CIS) solidly in fourth place in Canada West
