Spartans Extend Win Streak to 3

Calgary, AB - The 5th-ranked Spartan men's volleyball team took its winning ways on the road this weekend, winning a five-set match tonight at the 6th-ranked University of Calgary (16-25, 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 17-15).

The Dinos and Spartans came into this match with identical 2-4 records, but the win now vaults Trinity Western past both Calgary and UBC in the Canada West standings, to fifth place.

TWU led Calgary in the kill category (58-48) as well as in total attacks (137-114), but neither team hit the ball particularly well tonight-from the attack line or the service line. Trinity Western hit 16.8% to Calgary's 21.9%, while the two teams combined for 33 service errors and only 11 aces.

Calgary's Sean Kendal led both teams with 14 kills, while first-year Spartan Steven Rogalsky had 13 kills. Kendal also tallied 4 service aces, 6 digs and 5 blocks. Rogalsky had 2 service aces, 3 digs and 5 blocks.

Trinity Western plays at Calgary again tomorrow afternoon at 2:00pm in their final match before the Christmas break.

"There were a lot of errors on both sides tonight, but to our guys' credit they stuck with it and we found our rhythm in the second and third sets," said Coach Ron Pike. "Jason Hofer played well tonight, he passed the ball well and had some key blocks on one of their big hitters. Jeff Stel and Steve Rogalsky also came in and did a good job, and Jon Rowe was really good for us. We have some things to work on as a team and we'll have to get better for tomorrow's match."

Match Notes: Hofer had 12 kills, 7 digs and 3 blocks...Stel also had 12 kills...Calgary's Eric von Englebrecht had 13 kills, 6 digs and 3 blocks...TWU also defeated Calgary 3-2 in the preseason at Calgary's Dino Cup, which TWU won...
