Game Recap

Men's Volleyball (conference game)
Saturday, February 7, 2004
TWU Spartans (1) at the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (3)
(22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19)

On the Road

Vancouver, British Columbia - Unlike last night the Trinity Western University men's volleyball team was unable to come from behind as they dropped a four set decision to the University of British Columbia 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19).

"We did not play well tonight and UBC played with extreme passion," said TWU head coach Ron Pike. "Tonight our passing was a little off and we just could not find the right combination."

The win keeps the Thunderbirds hopes of clinching the sixth and final play off spot alive. While the loss virtually takes away any possibility that the Spartans will host a Canada West first round playoff match. Tonight's loss combined with the University of Saskatchewan win (17 points) puts the Spartans (15 points) two points behind the Huskies with only two points left to gain next weekend against Calgary. A win by the Huskies against Regina or a Spartan loss means TWU will be on the road for the play offs.

Seth Schalk (1st yr, outside, Lacombe, AB) - 16 kills and Jeff Stel (2nd yr, outside, Surrey, BC) - 10 kills led the Spartans, while Steve Corothers and Geoff Emslie led the T-Birds with 16 kills and 14 kills, respectively.

The Spartans finish off the regular season next weekend at home against the University of Calgary Dinos. Game time at TWU's David Enarson Gym is set for 7:00 pm. The match will be the final home court appearance for TWU seniors Chris Roy and Jason Hofer.

Match Notes: UBC had 8 blocks to TWU's 6.5 blocks...the Spartans hit at a 22% clip, while UBC hit for 28%...
