#2 Spartans Top #5 Wesmen in Marathon Match

Winnipeg, MB –
Led by Steve Rogalsky’s (2nd yr, rightside, Maple Ridge, BC) 21 kills, the Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team completed the weekend sweep of the University of Winnipeg with a marathon  3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 27-29, 36-34) victory Saturday night in Winnipeg, MB.

“We hung in there and played steady,” said TWU Head Coach Ron Pike. “We thought that they might crack, but Winnipeg really stuck in there and made the last two sets a real battle.”

The Spartans came out strong and made quick work of the first set, topping the Wesmen 25-15.

In the second set the Wesmen came out with fire and intensity and battled the Spartans in a back and forth set that saw the Spartans come out with a 25-22 set win and a two sets to none lead.

The last two sets kept the fans on the edge of their seats as the two teams combined for a total of 126 points.

The Wesmen heading into the third set were hungry and they were not going to let the set get away from them. Winnipeg’s Ben Schellenberg had several key kills in the third set to give the Wesmen a 29-27 set win.

Winnipeg did everything that they could to send the game to a fifth set. The fourth set proved to be a set for the ages as both teams matched each other kill for kill, and dig for dig. But in the end it was the visiting Spartans who prevailed as setter Josh Howatson (3rd yr, Victoria, BC) ended the marathon with an ace to take the final set 36-34.

The win improves the #2 ranked Spartans to 3-1 in Canada West, while the loss drops the Wesmen to 1-3.

The Spartans now head home to host the # 1 ranked University of Alberta next weekend. Match times on Friday, November 19 and Saturday, November 20 are set for 8:00 pm.

Match Notes: TWU had six team blocks to Winnipeg’s three…Howatson had an amazing 66 set assists…the Spartans finished with a 50% kill percentage, while the Wesmen finished at 27.9%...
