#2 Spartans Sweep #4 Thunderbirds

Langley, British Columbia –
The #2 ranked Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team finished the fall Canada West schedule with a hard fought two match sweep of the #4 ranked University of British Columbia Saturday night at UBC’s War Memorial Gym. The Spartans completed the sweep with a 3-2 (25-19, 28-30, 25-15, 22-25, 17-15) victory over the Thunderbirds.

It was the second straight night that the visiting second-ranked Spartans (5-3) earned a five-set victory, winning 15-10 over the sixth-ranked T-Birds (5-3) in the deciding frame on Friday.

The Thunderbirds were a point away from clinching the match at 14-13 in the fifth set, but they were unable to get the two point lead as TWU took the final set 17-15.

Saturday’s final set was a seesaw battle that saw three lead changes and the score tied on eight occasions.

“It was another real tough battle tonight and it’s really good to get out of there with two wins,” said TWU Head Coach Ron Pike. “The fourth set was a little heated and we lost our focus a little bit, but we gutted it out to get the match.”

The Spartans had a balanced attack as five players were in double-figures in kills with third-year left side Seth Schalk (Red Deer, Alta.) recording a team-high 15.

UBC’s Andrew Bonner, a second-year right side from Cobourg, Ont., led all players with 16 kills, while fourth-year libero Richard Chou (Vancouver) had a match-high 16 digs.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Saskatchewan on Friday, January 7, 2005. Match time in Saskatoon, SK is set for 8:00 pm.
