WESMEN GIVE DEFENDING CHAMPION SPARTANS ALL THEY COULD HANDLE

WINNIPEG
- The Wesmen Men's Volleyball gave the Trinity Western University Spartans all they could handle Friday night at the University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen did not go easy as they pushed the Spartans to five sets in TWU’s hard fought 3-2 (25-23, 26-28, 25-16, 18-25, 15-10) victory.

“We played descent tonight, we had some spurts where we were good and some where we weren’t,” said TWU Head Coach Ron Pike. “Winnipeg is a pretty good team and we need to play better if we are going to beat them on a consistent basis.”

The defending CIS champions took the first set 25-23 against a determined Wesmen squad.

In set number two Winnipeg battled back from being down at the technical timeouts to tie the score at 25-25 as Dustin Addison Schneider and first year Justin Duff came thru with a huge block to tie the score. The Wesmen took three of the next four points to take the second set 28-26.

The Spartans showed their true championship form in set three as they dominated the set winning it by a score of 25-16.

In the fourth set the Wesmen were not to be outdone as they raced out to leads of 8-5 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts on their way to a 25-18 set victory.

In the fifth and deciding set the Spartans grabbed an early lead and never looked back taking the decisive set 15-10.

Fourth year rightside Steve Rogalsky (Maple Ridge) led the Spartans with 22 kills on 44 attempts, while Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen finishing with a game high 23 kills on 50 attempts.

TWU’s middle blocker Doug Van Spronsen (4th year, Dawson Creek, B.C.) had the best stat line of the night. Van Spronsen finished with 14 kills while hitting at 72%, three service aces and 3.5 blocks.

The Wesmen always have a tough time with TWU’s service attack and tonight was no different as the Spartans finished with ten service aces.

The two teams will meet Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.
